The name of this natural area, Sierra Pelada, refers to a mid-mountain area that is located in the western stretches of the Sierra de Aracena. It is a topography of contrasts; linear mountain ranges covered in vegetation, deep ravines, and a gallery forest alongside the Rivera del Aserrador river.

On the Rivera del Aserrador trail, walkers can enjoy dense riverside forest, with the sound of rustling leaves on the poplar and ash trees, accompanied by the croaking of frogs and toads. Away from the river, you will find sections of Portuguese oaks and meadows made up of cork and holm oaks.

To get up close and personal with the mountains, you can walk the Sierra Pelada trail. Large tracts of land have been modified by mankind, whereby indigenous vegetation was replaced by stone pines and huge quantities of eucalyptus, arranged in terraces for the pulp and paper industry. The resources of the forest have been the main source of income for the small populations of the area, concentrated in towns such as Centinela and Mustio. From the latter you can access the Barranco del Aserrador, a rugged landscape of great beauty. Birds of prey such as the short-toed eagle, and mammals such as the wild cat reside here.

The place is also well known due to the fact that it is home to one of the most important colonies of black vulture in the Iberian Peninsula. For keen birdwatchers, it is possible to see these huge birds of prey and other endangered species, such as the black stork, in flight from the summits of Pelada, Mármol and Mojón. Another way to get to know the area is by cycling or horse riding.

The town of Aroche is close by. Remnants of prehistoric settlements survive, such as dolmens and menhirs, known as the Devil´s Stones. A visit to Aroche Castle is also recommended.
