DESCRIPTION

The UNESCO World Geopark Sierras Subbéticas is located in the south of Cordoba province. Its rocks harbour a history of approximately 250 million years, when the Tethys Sea surrounded this entire region. The collision between Africa and Eurasia approximately 5 million years ago, caused part of the seabed to rise, having been exposed to atmospheric agents. The result is the mountains and valleys of the current Betic Mountain Range, in which this Geopark is located centrally.

The limestone nature of those sea beds has led to the development of a spectacular karst landscape in the Subbetic Mountains and throughout the Geopark, with a complex system of caves and chasms, among which is the Natural Monument of the “Bat Cave”. However, these are not the only points of interest, since this natural protected area is home to a wealth of areas of geological interest, called Geosites, with most of them included in the Andalusian Geo-resources Inventory. Some of them are: the Fuente del Rey (Priego de Córdoba), the Lapiaz de los Lanchares (Cabra), the Bailón River Canyon (Zuheros), the Polje de la Nava (Cabra) from which you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic from the summit of Picacho de Cabra, and the Salinas de San Juan de Dios (Rute), the last active inland salt mine in the Sierras Subbéticas.

One of the main objectives of geoparks is the promotion of geotourism. For this reason, the Sierras Subbéticas Geopark has a wide range of facilities for public use (that can be consulted on this website) and through which you can learn about its rich geological heritage.

More information can be obtained about the geopark at the following link: www.juntadeandalucia.es/medioambiente/sierrassubbeticasgeopark

ACTIVITIES

Venturing inside the mountainous massif and exploring the very depths of the earth is made possible by going caving, a popular activity in the Subbetic Sierras. The most famous cave is the Cueva de los Murcielagos (Bat Cave) *, where, via an easy walk, you will see beautiful karst formations and learn about the archaeological remains discovered there dating from Neolithic times. Another, though less accessible, place you can visit is the Sima de Cabra **.

Hiking also attracts many enthusiasts interested in the limestone element of the mountain range. The La Nava trail begins at the foot of the emblematic Picacho de la Sierra de Cabra. From the top you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the entire area and it is possible to see the main geological units of Andalusia. Another path of interest is that of the Cañón del Río Bailón, a river which runs through vertiginous ravines and waterfalls alongside numerous caves with ancient origins.

Climbing and abseiling are activities for adrenaline seekers that can be done in the Las Cruces ** area. Additionally, larger stretches of this area can be explored on good bicycle trails, all the while accompanied by the melodious sound of running streams and birds chirruping.

(*) Organised, guided visits.
(**) Activities require authorisation from the Natural Park.

This natural protected area is affiliated with the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism , whose associated projects can be consulted by clicking here .
