The Cielo peak rises 1,508 metres above sea level, just six kilometres from the coast as the crow flies. The difficulty of the climb is more than compensated for by the satisfaction in its culmination and the immense views of the Axarquía and the sea between the European and African coasts. We will pass through a succession of places characterised by the increasing altitude, and we will be able to observe a multitude of details that distinguish and enrich each part.
The path starts from the beautiful coastal town of Nerja to cover a route that, upon reaching this peak, has its greatest charm in the panoramic views of the blue Mediterranean Sea. The landscape is completed by the white foam trailing behind the boats and, in the background, the high African mountains that you can make out on clear winter afternoons.
In this area, there is a long history of mountain people, as they called the maquis, these were the last rebels who used the Almijara and Tejeda mountains as a refuge and centre of operations. Between 1945 and 1954, there were nine years of fear and cruelty, complicity and betrayal that made the post-war here even more bitter. The areas around the Cielo Peak were the scene of some of the bloodiest battles between maquis and civil guards.
There are many other stories about these mountains as people were cast out to the mountains, some of these people, such as bandits, have been turned into legends, half-way between criminals and patriotic guerrillas in the fight against French, Mozarabic and Moorish invaders, persecuted by one form of fundamentalism or another and always marginalised by the Law, whether voluntarily or by force.
It is not advisable to visit this place in summer as there are no natural sources of water.
