In The Sierra de Cardeña y Montoro Natural Park is the Vegueta del Fresno hiking trail, whose most outstanding aspect, in addition to the beauty of the Yeguas River and its banks, is the rich fauna it houses. Species as emblematic of the Mediterranean forest as lynx, wolves, otters or the imperial eagle today recover their decimated populations in these privileged places, thanks to greater protection and collective awareness. The Iberian Lynx, emblem of this Natural Park, is the most threatened feline in the world.
The route begins in the Aldea del Cerezo in the southeast descending to the vicinity of the Yeguas River where the path has a circular section. It is located in the area of the Sierra Cardeña Montoro Natural Park that is most sensitive to endangered species, so passage through it may be totally or partially limited at certain times of the year.
In the first section of the path, the landscape continues to be similar to that we have seen up to this point, marked by pastures on granite plains. But soon we notice that the relief of the land is gradually becoming more energetic, and we see ourselves going down a ravine through which the Cantareras stream runs.
Arriving near the Yeguas river, we find a singular Terebinth cataloged as a legacy tree, since it has the characteristics of a tree. terebinth s are normally shrubs, as we have seen along the way.
At the bottom of the valley to which we continue descending we can already see the Yeguas River, to reach its banks after travelling the last seven hundred metres. This river is one of the jewels of nature in the park and in the entire south of the Iberian peninsula. Its riverside forest, with willows, poplars, ash trees and oleanders, covers a wide riverbed with boulders that bear witness to its geological vitality.
Several roads converge in Cardeña: the N-420 (Montoro-Tarragona) that connects it with the Guadalquivir valley, the A-423 (Cardeña-Alzaracejos) and the A-420 (Cardeña-Marmolejo). Once in Cardeña, take the lane to Aldea del Cerezo that passes under the turnoff of the N-420. From the Aldea del Cerezo, we will follow the sign that indicates the beginning of the path, heading towards the Yeguas river valley. There is a descriptive start sign for the hiking trail and a gate, which marks the beginning.
