The vast majority of this protected space coincides with the mountain of the same name, and is located on the right side of the road that connects Huelva with Mazagon (H-442).

It is home to an interesting interdune marsh complex, which is close to the Rio Tinto estuary, in an area of gentle topography and sandy composition.

The complex is structured on a diverse number of independent basins of varying size, both seasonal and permanent, some of which are artificially connected by means of channels with the La Jara and de la Mujer lagoons (Natural Area nearby). It it thereby a connecting link for nearby wetlands, which makes it a place of great value for birds, especially as a resting place on migratory routes for ducks, herons and shorebirds.

The forest area is made up of eucalyptus and stone pines, as well as patches of Juniperus macrocarpa. This composition, alongside abundant Anthyllis cytisoides, creates an ideal habitat for the chameleon and Iberian lynx, who use it as a littoral green corridor.

The Dunas del Odiel Botanical Garden is here and belongs to the Andalusian Network of Botanical Gardens in Natural Protected Areas. It features characteristic plant species from the Andalusian Atlantic coast and is also a conservation centre, with a good deal of species under threat or of special interest in its collections. The protected area also has a viewpoint and birdlife observatory at the bottom of the road.

The environment has been highly anthropized and industrialised, with the Huelva Port Authority, the Nuevo Puerto Industrial Park and intensive agricultural operations present in the area.
