Geoparks encourage research and collaboration with universities and scientific institutions as well as promote communication of geological sciences with the local population.
Since the final of the XIX century, the Subbética Cordobesa has been the focus of several studies covering fields areas like geological structure, karst modelling, subsurface water, fossil sites, etc. Such studies has contributed to the definition of natural and cultural heritage elements, including endemic species, peculiar habitats, singular geological formations, etc. All this has served to strength the territorial identity.
