CABO DE GATA-NIJAR - Ventana del Visitante
Recognised as such in 2015, the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Unesco World Geopark is both an unusual coastal strip and a unique example of Mediterranean steppe. Located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, it it unique for it sub-desert Mediterranean climate. A low average of rainfall, together with temperatures between 15 and 22 degrees Celsius, make up one of the most unique areas in Andalusia; the most arid natural protected area in all of Europe. In addition, its 63 kilometres of cliffs constitute the best preserved coastline of the Spanish Mediterranean, and its arid and volcanic locations one of the most important protected areas in the entire European continent.
The enormous geological wealth of this space has facilitated the promotion of geotourism as a socioeconomic alternative to classic sun and beach tourism. For this reason, the Geopark is home to the La Casa de Los Volcanes Ecomuseum, the first centre of its kind in Andalusia aimed at investigating the geological features of the territory. It welcomes visitors and imparts knowledge about the geological origins of the area with the intention of promoting understanding of the geography that makes up the land.
Via its 16 trails, which pass through most of its 33 georecourses, you can discover the fossil beaches of Las Amoladeras on the signposted El Pocico-Las Marinas trail; volcanic cliffs on the La Vela Blanca signposted trail; the culture of wind and water on the La Molata signposted trail; and what life was like thousands and thousands of years ago on the signposted Requena trail. These tours are accompanied by numerous informative panels that educate on the geology of Cabo de Gata-Níjar.

Without a doubt, one of the activities that generates the most interest in this natural park is scuba diving. The underwater world of Cabo de Gata-Níjar is an amazing area of rich, natural beauty. Submerged in the transparent waters of La Isleta, you will find yourself surrounded by coral reef and brightly-coloured fish that flit in and out of the rocks and sprawling Posidonea meadows. By taking a boat trip you can access beautiful coves such as Cala Chica and San Pedro that are otherwise difficult to reach. You can also do other water activities such as canoeing.
On the mainland, we recommend hiking signposted routes such as Los Genoveses which leads you through coves and cliffs to the beautiful beach of the same name. The route that goes through Las Amoladeras, (also known as the bird route), enters protected area where rare steppe birds such as Dupont´s lark can be spotted.
Another option is to cycle. An interesting route passes through the old mining town of Rodalquilar and leads to Cerro del Cinto. From here you have an excellent panoramic view of the area.
Alternatively, you can choose an enjoyable route on horseback in the outskirts of San José. Or a more off-road route, treading the tracks between San José and Mónsul.
This natural protected area is affiliated with the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism , whose associated projects can be consulted by clicking here .
