El Torcal stands out as an isolated relief which is somewhat different to that surrounding it. But, in reality, from the Diego Monea viewpoint you can see that, although somewhat separate, it belongs to the so-called Central Calizo Arch.
This formation is made up of the Sierra de Alhama (Granada), Sierra de las Cabras, the sierras of Co, Prieta, del Jobo, Gorda and San Jorge, together with the Sierra del Torcal, the sierra de la Chimenea, and, to the far west, the sierras of Huma, Llana and Abdalajís.
As you can see, this impressive mountain range acts as a barrier between the Antequera Depression and, on the other side, the Mountains of Malaga and the Mediterranean Sea.
Among these limestone rocky areas dominated by the mountain goat, there is a mosaic of agricultural fields, grasslands and the remains of natural vegetation. In some areas sandstone and other siliceous materials also appear, forming hilly and evolved lands, on which the the cork oak is still present.
