Provision of cell lines

The PHSA Biobank engages in important work with regards to cell lines. This work involves cellular generation, expansion, and maintenance as well as the preservation and storage of cell lines derived from this work. Since the Biobank is the Coordinating Centre of the National Bank of Cell Lines (NBCL) and acts as a technical support and management platform, this activity is integrated into its portfolio of services and quality management system. In our facilities at the PHSA Biobank Coordination Centre, we maintain and preserve different cell lines, including pluripotent lines, hPSC, and deposits in the NBCL. These cells lines are made available to the scientific community. The safekeeping of cell lines involves maintaining the cell lines according to quality standards that guarantee their viability once they are thawed. To ensure the quality and viability of all of the cryopreserved lines in our facilities, the preservation method that we use is crucial. The preservation method is a critical process, since it may compromise the state of the lines and their subsequent use in optimal conditions. In addition, cell lines are tested through exhaustive quality controls that include mycoplasma testing, conventional cytogenetics to check the degree of stability of cell lines, identification of short tandem repeats, STR and cell morphology.
